FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A pair of Fredonia State seniors were named to the All-SUNYAC squad this week -- firstbaseman
Taylor Gahagen and rightfielder
Jon Messina.
Gahagen batted .349, fifth in the conference. He led the league in walks (26) and stolen bases (24) while starting every game for the Blue Devils. His .497 on-base percentage ranked second overall. He scored 31 runs, good enough for third in the conference.
Gahagen had also won a New York Region Gold Glove as a sophomore. He split time at shortstop as a freshman, and was the Devils' first baseman the past three seasons.
He finishes his four-year career with a .310 average and is the Devils all-time leader with 50 stolen bases -- he was succesful in 50 of 53 attempts (94 percent). He also ranks among the team's Top 10 in homeruns (8) and hits (109).
Messina's .344 average was sixth in the league. He ranked among the league leaders in several categories: runs (32, second); doubles (10, second); triples (3, second); hits (43, fourth); slugging percentage (fourth, .472); stolen bases (14, fifth); and on-base percentage (.443, fifth).
Messina spent two seasons at Jamestown Community College before taking over for the graduated Jordan Basile as the Devils' leadoff hitter. Both were Jamestown High School graduates.
Messina posted a career average of .352.
