Home SUNYAC weekend for Devil hoops teams

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Both Fredonia State teams will look to enhance their SUNYAC playoff chances when they entertain Brockport and Geneseo this Friday and Saturday at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.

The women's team enters the weekend with a 5-8 SUNYAC record with five games left to play. The are currently the No. 7 in the eighth-team bracket. They trail No. 6 Oswego by one game and are one-half game ahead of No. 8 Plattsburgh.

The Blue Devil men also have five conference games left. They are tied with Brockport for the No. 5 seed. Both teams are one game behind No. 4 seed Geneseo.

Game times are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday vs. Brockport, and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday vs. Geneseo, with the women playing the first game of each doubleheader.

Of note for the women, sophomore guard Becky Hebert (Hilton) is second in the SUNYAC and No. 13 in NCAA Division III in scoring average. Hebert is averaging 20.8 points per game. Meanwhile, senior guard Nicole Calbi (Olean) averages 5.3 assists per game, which ranks 19th nationally, and sophomore forward Jaimie Warren (Lakeview) has seven double-doubles, tied for 84th best in the category.

In addition, Hebert's 353 points this season ranks 13th highest among Blue Devils for a single season. Should she continue to scoring at her present average, she could move into the top 10 on the list.

On the men's side, Amir Billups (Buffalo) ranks No. 10 in NCAA Division III three-point field goal percentage. The junior guard has connected on 49 of 111 attempts, a percentage of 44.1. In addition, his 49 treys is tied for sixth on Fredonia State's single-season record list. Greg Lauer holds the school record with 63 treys during the 1999-2000 season.

Defense has been key for the men's success so far. They have held opponents to 61.5 points per game, which ranks 35th in NCAA Division III. They are 34th nationally at defending the three-point basket (29.6 percent) and 52nd at overall field-goal defense (40.2 percent). In addition, the Blue Devils rank 57th in rebounding margin. They are averaging 5.9 rebounds per game more than their opponents.
