Lorenzo signs with Santa Fe

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Former Fredonia University baseball standout Conner Lorenzo signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Sante Fe Fuego of the independent Pecos League. Lorenzo signed on for the 2015 season with the defending league champion.

Lorenzo becomes the second Blue Devil to sign with the Pecos League. Rob Herrmann played for the Trinidad Triggers in 2012.

Lorenzo captained the Blue Devils last season as the team's starting shortstop and leadoff hitter. He was the team's second baseman the previous three seasons.

"Connor's contribution transcended his stats," said his coach at Fredonia, Matt Palisin. "He had to change positions due to injury his senior year and played tremendous defense. He batted in spots up and down the order. He was a total team player."

Lorenzo played this past summer in the Carolina Virginia Collegiate League where he was named an all star for the second straight year. He was invited to a workout in North Carolina following the season where he was then offered an opportunity to sign. He is scheduled to report to training camp next May. The Pecos League plays a 70-game schedule.

"As a kid, you always dream about playing professional baseball," said Lorenzo. "Now that it is a reality, it is an awesome feeling."

In addition to baseball, Lorenzo has also recently been named as the junior varsity wrestling coach at his alma mater, Brighton High School. He begins that assignment in November.
