GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Fredonia fifth-year senior
Collin Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) is looking to make a return trip to NCAA Men's Cross Country championship meet. He'd like to take a teammate or two along with him.
Mulcahy and seven teammates will compete Saturday at the 2016 Atlantic Regional on the West Campus of Rowan University. The starting gun for the 8,000-meter race is scheduled for noon.
Led by Mulcahy and
Kyle Collins, eighth and ninth, respectively, the Blue Devils finished 11th as a team at last year's regional
"(That) was about as good as we could have done," Fredonia Head Coach
Tom Wilson said. "We have a much tighter team this year with a group of men that truly want to work together and fight for every position. I am very excited to see how this men's team will respond to the Atlantic Region's best runners."
Fredonia's contingent consists of one runner from each class year.
Bobby Cooper (Macedon, N.Y./Gananda) and Mulcahy are the seniors;
Jack Erhard (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee),
Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton), and
Cyd Scott (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) are the juniors; the sophomores are
Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) and
Zak Kellerman (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster); and
Aidan Pollard (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) is the lone freshman.
Francis is coming off a seventh-place showing at the SUNYAC meet last Saturday to lead Fredonia to a third-place finish in the team standings. He, Mulcahy, Cooper, and Joseph are making return regional appearances.
"After a very strong showing at SUNYAC's," Wilson said, "our expectations will be to continue the push and run our way into the Top 10 of the regional rankings. We have the hope that two or three runners will finish all-region, the Top 35 across the finish line, (and we're) looking to have three or four all-academic (top 65 runners in the region with a 3.30 grade-point average or higher).
"The course is very flat and fast. We will be looking to run a patient but confident race and push one another to finish in a tight group."
