GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Rowan University's West Campus is the site of the 2016 NCAA Atlantic Regional Women's Cross Country championship race.
Scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, the 6,000-meter race will include eight Fredonia women. They are seniors
Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth, N.Y./Ruben A. Crillio),
Kara Hall (Fredonia, N.Y./Byron-Bergen), and
Julia Johnson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker); and sophomores
Carly DeBono (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford),
Brenna Donovan (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter),
Kristen Guarino (Bergen, N.Y./Byron-Bergen),
Hannah Kurbs (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), and
Stephanie Wojnowski (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge).
Five of the eight ran in the 2015 race at Letchworth State Park, Binggeli was best of the quintet, finishing third for the team and 79th overall. She was followed, in order, by Kurbs, Wojnowski, Johnson, and Hall.
The Blue Devils -- led by
Laura Morrison and
Lauren Kotas -- were 11th of 37 complete teams at last year's race.
Fredonia is coming off a fourth-place finish at the SUNYAC meet last Saturday.
"It will be an emotionally filled event this weekend," Head Coach
Tom Wilson said. "The team has been running faster each week leading up to regionals. The goal is to cap off a fast post season portion of our training and finish in the Top 10, something that has never been done for the women's team since the rankings began."
The Top 35 finishers are named to the all-region team while the Top 65 with a grade-point average of 3.30 or above get named to the all-academic team. Wilson is hopeful Fredonia's entire scoring team -- its first five finishers -- qualify for the all-academic category.
"This race is for my runners," he said. "There is no pressure during the regional championships. The women did their job at SUNYACs and now its up to them to decide how they want to finish their cross country season."
