HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia's
Rocky Caparro (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) won one event and was second in another at the Houghton December Classic, the first meet of the 2016-17 indoor track and field season.
Caparro won the triple jump in 13.98 meters (45 feet, 10 1/2 inches), a new fieldhouse record, and was second in the high jump behind teammate
Nick Serafin (Depew, N.Y./Depew). Both men cleared 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4 3/4 inches) with Serafin doing so with fewer misses.
Fredonia had a third-place finisher Friday as
Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) took the 3,000-meter run in 9:04.72.
Other second-place performances came from
Kyle Brown (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) in the 35-pound weight throw at 15.87 meters (52 feet, 1 inch);
Jacob Valley (Fredonia, N.Y./Lancaster)Â in the long jump at 6.55 meters (21 feet, 6 inches); and
Bobby Cooper (Macedon, N.Y./Gananda) in the 3,000 meters in 9:08.93.
Fredonians finishing third were
Pat Shenal (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) in the mile (4:36.24);
Mitchel Paciga (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Sullivan West) in the high jump (1.90 meters / 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches); and
Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) in the 3,000 meters (9:10.68). Â
The meet was held in Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse.
