Sophomore Ryan Ameis was tabbed Second Team, and senior Chance LaCroix was named Third Team.

Ameis was one of the top defenders in the SUNYAC starting all 19 games, often playing in every minute. He also had a scoring touch, collecting four goals. His biggest moment came in the SUNYAC Tournament. He accounted for the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh. Off a corner kick, his header found the net. He was named to the All Tournament Team following the tournament.

LaCroix led the Devils in both goals (5) and assists (7) for a total of 17 points. His biggest moment came when he delivered the aforementioned corner kick on Ameis' playoff goal. For his career, he collected 16 goals and 15 assists.

"In such a competitive conference to even be recognized is an impressive accomplishment for both Ryan and Chance," said head coach P.J. Gondek. "In my opinion Ryan is one of the top centerbacks in the league. While he is a great defender he is also very dangerous on restarts, so he brings an offensive component to our team. Chance consistently brought grit, determination and toughness to the field every game. This award is a testament to his commitment, work ethic and leadership he has brought to our program throughout his entire career."

The duo helped lead the Devils to a playoff berth and First Round victory. The team finished the season at 8-7-4 and 4-4-1 in the conference.

Ameis LaCroix All SUNYAC MSOC 2005

<s:sport_id>7</s:sport_id><s:story_id>9324</s:story_id>

Four named to All Tournament Team

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- At the conclusion of SUNYAC Tournament, two men's and two women's soccer players were named to the All Tournament team. Both squads won a first-round contest.

For the men, sophomore Ryan Ameis and junior Thomas McDonald were named. Ameis scored the team's only goal in a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh in the First Round. McDonald, a goalkeeper, made 11 saves and gave up two goals. The Devils eventually fell to Buffalo State, 2-0, in the Semifinal Round.

"Thomas and Ryan were integral to our victory over Plattsburgh," said head coach P.J. Gondek. "Thomas made some key second half saves and Ryan did his usual defensive work and scored the game winner. Their consistency carried over into the semifinals at Buffalo State even in the loss. To be fair these performances were typical of them throughout the entire season. Looking forward to having them both back in 2026."

The women also had their goaltender, freshman Casey Fetzner, honored, along with junior Bronwyn Madden. The women won their First Round game, 1-0, in double overtime over Oswego thanks to a Golden Goal from Madden. She would assist on the team's only score in a 2-1, season-ending loss at Plattsburgh. Fetzner made 16 saves and allowed two goals. Ten of those saves came in the shutout of Oswego.

The Blue Devil volleyball team and men's cross country team both earned two points with victories, while the women's soccer teams each got one point after tying. The Bengals took the points for women's cross country men's soccer.

Fredonia State is currently in possession of the traveling trophy, The Lake Erie Cup. They defeated Buffalo State, 17-11 last year. They lead the all-time series, 5-4-1 since its inception during the 2014-15 academic year.

Volleyball won 3-0, and men's cross country was in second place to Buff State's fourth place finish at the SUNYAC Championship Meet. The womens' soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie. Men's soccer fell 2-1 in a highly contested contest. Women's cross country finished the conference meet in 10th place, while Buff State slid in to ninth place.

Next up for the men is a short trip up I-90 to Buffalo State. The ladies have a bit further to go, with an overnight trip to Plattsburgh.

MEN at BUFFALO STATE
Earlier the season, the men fell 2-1 at Buffalo State, with the game-winning goal coming via a penalty kick in the 67th minute.

Coaches comments:
"Advancing in the SUNYAC playoffs is no small task so we are ecstatic to be moving on," said head coach P.J. Gondek. "We were not at our best against Plattsburgh but we were able to defend and find a late goal. Buffalo State is certainly a formidable opponent having only lost once this year. After a sluggish first half last time around were able to tie the game and after a back-and-forth second half giving up the penalty was the difference. As one of the top teams in our region with one of the top scorers in the country this is a tough matchup for sure, but a team that we are very familiar with."

The Devils also defeated the Cardinals 1-0 earlier this year.

Ryan Ameis scored the Devils' game-winner

In a scoreless game with just over 11 minutes left to play, the Cardinals had a golden opportunity to score. A crossing shot from the right side of the goal was headed to the net. A diving Thomas McDonald punched the ball wide to save a goal. The Devils capitalized on that momentum two minutes later as LaCroix lofted his corner kick perfectly to a waiting Ameis with 9:07 left on the clock.

With 6:25 left to play, McDonald made another huge save, this time punching a straight on, line drive shot up over the net. He would finish the day with six saves for his sixth shutout of the year.

His counterpart for the Hawks, Matthew Dippolito, was not credited with any saves, as the only shot on goal was good for a score.

New Paltz outshot the Devils, 12-2, and had a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also led 8-4 in corner kicks.

The last time the Devils won a post-season game, it was a win over Plattsburgh back in 2016. The Devils claimed the win in a shootout after the teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie.
